Feeding Redfoot Tortoises boiled eggs

Redfoot tortoise food

Egg salad surprise, with Crested Gecko Diet

I read more and more in different places that variety is key in a redfoot tortoise diet. It makes sense, they go out and explore for food in the wild every day and most likely get a good variation from day to day. It is sort of like tortoise enrichment for captive tortoises to experience food they never have before.

So maybe you’re wondering… why? Well the answer I have developed is fairly simple.

Boiled eggs are beneficial for redfoot tortoises for many reasons. The egg shell contains calcium that is useful in their diet and is commonly supplemented with reptile formula additives. The egg shell is simply a natural alternative. Also, they enjoy the crunch of the shell as they bite in. Next, the egg its self is a good source of protein that is recommended in red foot tortoise diets once or twice a week.

The crested gecko diet is something I had laying around from when I used to keep Rhacodactylus like crested geckos and gargoyle geckos. Lets look at what the CGD contains.

Banana powder, honey powder, hempola hempseed meal, bee pollen, calcium caseinate (source of isolated protein), fig powder, wheat germ meal, alfalfa leaf meal, brewers yeast, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, yeast culture, spirulina algae, rosehips powder, kelp meal, haemotococcus algae, marigold extract, rosemary extract, yucca extract, natural mixed tocopherols (as a preservative), vitamin A acetate, d-activated animal sterol (source of vitamin D3), dried aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, dried aspergillus niger fermentation extract, dried lactobacillus fermentation product, dried bifidobacterium thermophilum fermentation product, dried bifidobacterium longum fermentation product, dried enterococcus faecium fermentation product and dried bacillus subtilis fermentation product.

All of these ingredients are also edible for the redfoot tortoises. Many things in this diet are comparable to vitamin supplements available for reptiles in captivity.

So why the combination? The Crested Gecko Diet adds a little moister to the dry boiled eggs that I crushed up. Also, as mentioned before it adds a sense of surprise to the tortoises diet. A nice new taste that they have never experienced before… and it’s super beneficial to them!

How did the tortoises like it? You be the judge! :)

I used Crested Gecko Diet because it’s what I had laying around. If you can think of something else to put on top of the boiled eggs feel free! Just make sure that it is safe for them!
