Cleaning your pet reptile’s water dish

A clean water bowl can prevent many problems. Red foot tortoises commonly defecate in their water dishes. Dirty water can lead to many problems, including harboring of parasites like pin worms. Keeping it clean can be simple if you follow a few steps.

If you allow your water dish to be dry out once per day it could reduce possible problems of parasites. Remember, water is vital to your redfoot tortoise’s health. Water should always be available so if you use two water dishes and alternate uses each day it may help.

To clean water dishes I use the following method:

1) Empty your water dish and rinse it out.

2) Fill the water dish and add about 1 table spoon of bleach.

3) Allow it to sit for 30 minutes to an hour.

Caution: Make sure the water dish with bleach is out of reach of other pets, ingesting can be deadly!
I cover my water bowl to make sure nothing gets in while it is being cleaned with bleach.

4) Rinse the dish thoroughly a few times.

5) Allow the dish to air dry and sit in the sun if possible.

6) Smell the dish to make sure the odor of bleach is gone. If you can still smell bleach then rinse and dry until the spell is gone.

7) Fill the water dish with clean water and put it back into the cage!

There are other ways to clean your water dish. There are products available just for reptile cage and accessory cleaning that work very well. I have not used these but you can find a few below
